Over the years we have found that the number one reason people do business with us here at K-Star Fitness is to lose weight. Most people come to us out of frustration because of their unsuccessful attempts at losing weight either on their own, through fad dieting, through commercial weight loss centers, through invasive surgery, or whatever. They may have experienced initial weight loss success but over time they’ve gained even more weight back than before they had started. (Also referred to as Yo-Yo Dieting). Unfortunately, some clients have even sacrificed their own health to lose weight!

We feel your frustration and pain. We want you to know that K-Star Fitness can and does offer you helpful solutions. We also give you the tools to be successful for the long run. After our free consultation, many clients begin to realize some of the most common mistakes associated with the commercial weight loss industry. (Please view our Weight Management Video Part 1 and Part 2). From our surveys, we have discovered the top two reasons for most of our client’s frustrations;

    1. The Commercial Weight Loss industry’s improper focus on body weight.
    2. The Commercial Weight Loss industry’s lack of proper education to ensure their customers long term weight loss success.

You see, commercial weight loss centers know that you want to lose weight. Obviously, that’s why you went there in the first place. Here’s their typical procedure; they’ll sit you down, find out how much weight you want to lose, take your money, and then recommend their Gold Plan for you to lose weight. If you really want to target the weight loss, for more money you can sign up for the Gold Plus Plan. This may even include their patented convenience meals. Basically, they’re all just restricted calorie diets.

Fact – 3,500 calories = 1 pound

Here’s their formula for your success; if you really want to lose weight you need to reduce your calories by 1,000 calories per day. They contend that this will equate to a loss of two pounds per week. Mathematically this is true. However, this is not only unhealthy and dangerous for you; it’s also not quite correct.

Using the Commercial Weight Loss Center’s rational, here’s how it plays out. Using the above example of reducing your calories by1,000 per day let’s assume we have a person who weighs 200 lbs. After one year the dieter will have lost 104 lbs. After two years the dieter will have lost a total of 208 lbs. By using this rational, our dieter will have totally disappeared within 2 years!

Obviously, we know that this does not happen. What really happens is that your body adapts to the reduction of calories. Your body does not understand that you’ve gone on a diet. It only perceives this large caloric restriction as “starvation”. You will lose weight initially. The weight you lose will come mostly from water and then muscle. Please understand that our bodies are composed of approximately 72-73% water. So, the majority of the initial weight loss will come first from water and secondly from lean muscle, (The eating away of lean muscle is called a catabolic process. This is not healthy!).

As a person continues with this type of dieting, the body will eventually enter into a “fat storing metabolism”! This is bad! When we’re in this condition, most of the calories we eat will actually be stored as fat! When you starve yourself, your metabolism slows down in order for you to survive. As it stores the calories as fat, your body still has to get energy from another source. Remember, the very last source your body uses for energy are your fat stores. Before it taps into your fat stores, it will make an attempt to convert your lean muscle into usable carbohydrates in order for it to function and stay alive. The less amount of lean muscle means your body’s metabolism slows even further. There is an order that your body goes through to obtain energy. It first uses the glycogen stores, (carbohydrates), then muscle, and lastly the fat.

Severely reduced caloric diets will also cause people to experience other negative symptoms such as; reduced energy, sluggishness, headaches, cravings for sweets, fast foods, etc. It’s your body’s way of trying to fuel itself because you’re not eating enough calories to support your metabolism.

If you want to lose fat, (weight), and remain healthy, exercise is the key! Incorporating the proper type of cardiovascular training, resistance training, and eating habits will significantly improve your body composition, health, and energy levels! When you learn how to keep and enhance your lean muscle, it not only helps the metabolism stay high, it also burns the unwanted fat. Lean muscle is 9 times metabolically more active than fat! We want and need more lean muscle!
